Monaco at the Heart of Francophone Women’s Leadership

The Principality welcomed women parliamentarians from across the French-speaking world for a landmark gathering dedicated to leadership, international cooperation and the power of shared experience.

From 19 to 23 October 2026, the Principality of Monaco welcomed more than twenty women parliamentarians from across the French-speaking world for the ninth edition of the Francophone Women Parliamentarians’ Leadership Workshop.

Held in Monaco for the first time, the event brought together elected representatives from different countries to exchange experiences, strengthen professional networks and explore ways to advance women’s participation in political life.

The initiative was led by Marine Hugonnet-Grisoul, President of the Monegasque Section of the Parliamentary Assembly of La Francophonie (APF), whose commitment to international parliamentary cooperation helped bring this important gathering to the Principality.

At its heart was a shared ambition: to encourage women’s access to positions of responsibility, support their engagement in public life and inspire future generations of political leaders.

A Princely Welcome in Monaco

One of the highlights of the programme was a courtesy visit to the Prince’s Palace, where the parliamentarians were received by H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco.

The reception provided a memorable moment for the participants and reflected the importance of international dialogue within the Principality.

Against the historic backdrop of the Prince’s Palace, the gathering symbolised the connections that unite women working towards greater representation and participation in political decision-making.

For Monaco, the event offered another opportunity to demonstrate how a small state can play a meaningful role in fostering international cooperation and constructive dialogue.

Marine Hugonnet-Grisoul: Inspiring Future Generations

At the centre of the initiative was Marine Hugonnet-Grisoul, whose involvement within the Parliamentary Assembly of La Francophonie reflects a commitment to strengthening the role of women in political institutions.

In her official statement, she emphasised the importance of women’s contributions to public life:

“Women have their rightful place in political life and exercise essential responsibilities every day. Their commitment grows stronger from generation to generation.”

She also highlighted the importance of sharing experiences and inspiring future generations:

“Through this workshop, we wish to encourage this momentum by sharing our experiences and our respective journeys, with the ambition of inspiring new vocations and future generations.”

Her message captured the spirit of the workshop: leadership is not defined solely by individual achievement, but also by the ability to encourage others and create opportunities for those who follow.

Throughout the programme, participants exchanged perspectives on political engagement, leadership and the challenges facing women in public office.

These discussions highlighted the value of mentorship, solidarity and international cooperation in building more inclusive political institutions.

Celebrating Francophone Excellence: The Order of La Pléiade

The week also featured a ceremony for the presentation of the insignia of the Order of La Pléiade, held in Monaco on 22 October 2026.

Established by the Parliamentary Assembly of La Francophonie, the Order recognises individuals who have made significant contributions to the promotion of the French language, Francophone cooperation and dialogue between cultures.

The ceremony added a distinguished institutional dimension to the week’s events, celebrating the values of cultural exchange, international friendship and public service.

It also reflected the broader importance of recognising those whose commitment helps strengthen ties within the Francophone community.

Advancing Women’s Rights and Well-being

Beyond political leadership, the workshop addressed issues affecting women’s rights, health and well-being.

Participants met with Céline Cottalorda, Monaco’s Interministerial Delegate for the Promotion and Protection of Women’s Rights.

The meeting offered an opportunity to learn about initiatives undertaken in the Principality and to exchange perspectives on approaches adopted in the participating countries.

The programme also coincided with Pink October, the international breast cancer awareness campaign.

As part of the initiative, the parliamentarians attended an awareness session led by Camille Brezzo, a senior healthcare professional at the Princess Grace Hospital Centre.

Dedicated to the importance of early detection and breast self-examination, the session highlighted the essential role of education and prevention in women’s health.

It also served as a reminder that women’s empowerment extends beyond political representation to encompass health, dignity and the well-being of communities.

Strengthening International Parliamentary Cooperation

The October gathering followed another significant Francophone parliamentary event hosted by Monaco earlier in the year, when the Principality welcomed the Young Parliamentarians’ Network of the Parliamentary Assembly of La Francophonie in March 2026.

Together, these initiatives reflect the active engagement of Monegasque representatives in international parliamentary dialogue.

During the week, Marine Hugonnet-Grisoul also welcomed Nathalie Roy, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of La Francophonie and President of the National Assembly of Québec.

Their exchanges highlighted the importance of maintaining strong institutional relationships and encouraging cooperation across national, cultural and political boundaries.

A Shared Vision for the Future

As the workshop drew to a close, its significance extended beyond the five days spent in Monaco.

The gathering demonstrated the value of international cooperation in creating opportunities for dialogue, strengthening professional networks and inspiring future generations of women to pursue leadership roles.

For the Principality, it represented another expression of its commitment to diplomacy, cultural exchange and international engagement.

For the participating parliamentarians, it offered an opportunity to share knowledge, build lasting connections and return to their respective countries with fresh perspectives.

At a time when inclusive leadership remains an important international priority, the Monaco gathering offered a compelling reminder that meaningful progress is built through cooperation, determination and a willingness to inspire others.

When women share their experiences, strengthen their voices and support one another, they do more than shape political institutions — they help shape the future.
